What your favourite CNY dishes mean

During Chinese New Year, some dishes are a must-have at reunion dinners because they carry a symbolic meaning.

Fish

Fish in Chinese is “Yu” and “Yu” also means “surplus”, and it is always good to have extra food, money, and love. So don’t forget to have cooked fish at your table. For best results, leave some fish uneaten to truly experience “surplus”.

Pineapple

Translate the word “pineapple” in Cantonese and you will get “Wong Lai”, which sounds a lot like — prosperity is coming. Get a piece of prosperity by trying our Pineapple Coconut Fried Rice.

Longevity noodles

If you wish to live to a hundred years old, be sure to slurp some longevity noodles. They are longer than ordinary noodles and therefore represent long life. A word of caution: Don’t cut them.

Lobster and chicken

Lobster represents the dragon, and chicken represents the phoenix. Together, they symbolise blissful marriage, harmony and great flavour. We recommend trying our Fortune Bundle, which includes both the lobster and chicken.

Chinese dumpling

Before asking for a pay raise or buying 4D, try eating dumplings. As they look a lot like gold ingots (currency used thousands of years ago), there is a chance you can make more money in 2019 if you eat more dumplings now.

With this newfound knowledge, go impress your relatives at the reunion table.
